Herbalism at Sassy Fae

Herbalism & Traditional Herbal Remedies in Daytona Beach

Herbalism has been part of my life and my work for more than 20 years. I don't think of herbs as another service I decided to add. They are part of how I have learned to understand people, plants, traditional preparations and the many ways people have cared for one another across generations.

Herbalism Isn't Something I Do — It's Part of Who I Am

For most of human history, plants, teas, tinctures, poultices and other traditional preparations were simply part of everyday care. Families and communities often had someone who knew the plants, knew how they were prepared and carried that knowledge forward.

I have always understood that kind of role.

Over more than two decades, I have developed practical working knowledge of herbs and traditional preparations. I continue learning from the plants themselves, from experience, and from the people who come through my door.

A Working Knowledge Built Over Time

Herbalism, to me, is not about memorizing a list of plants and assigning one plant to one problem. People are different. Circumstances are different. I listen to what someone is experiencing, pay attention to the whole person and draw from the knowledge I have accumulated over the years.

Traditional Herbal Preparations

Teas & Tinctures

Herbs can be prepared in many different ways. Teas and tinctures are two traditional forms I work with, depending on the plant, the preparation and the individual situation.

Poultices & Topical Preparations

Herbal knowledge also includes external preparations such as poultices, salves and other traditional topical applications. These are part of the practical side of herbalism that has been passed from generation to generation for a very long time.

The Preparation Matters

The plant is only one part of herbalism. How it is prepared, how it is used and the person using it all matter. That is one reason I do not approach herbalism as a one-size-fits-all system.

The Herbs at My Healing Center

If you walk into Sassy Fae, you will see shelves filled with an extensive working collection of herbs. They are not decorations. They are plants I know, use and continue learning from.

That collection represents years of accumulated practical knowledge. Some herbs become teas. Some are used in tinctures. Some become topical preparations. Others may simply remain part of the working collection until the right situation brings them forward.

I also make a small line of handcrafted herbal teas and topical preparations at Sassy Fae.

Herbalism, Reiki and the Whole Person

I am an herbalist. I am a Reiki Master. I am a Licensed Practical Nurse. I am intuitive.

I don't experience those as separate identities that I switch on and off. They are different parts of what I have learned and different ways of observing the same human being.

Sometimes the conversation is about herbs. Sometimes Reiki becomes relevant. Sometimes another part of my experience matters. I begin with the person who is actually standing in front of me rather than assuming everyone needs the same thing.

Learning From Both Traditional and Modern Perspectives

After practicing Reiki and working with herbs for many years, I chose to go to nursing school because I wanted another perspective. I wanted to understand more about what conventional medicine and science had to say about the human body and the things I had already spent years observing.

Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse did not replace what I had learned before. It gave me another body of knowledge to carry with me.

I keep those roles in perspective. Herbalism is not a substitute for appropriate medical care, and my nursing education does not make every traditional herbal practice a medical treatment. What it does give me is another way of understanding the person in front of me.

Working With the Person in Front of Me

People don't arrive as categories to me.

I listen. I observe. I pay attention to what the person is actually experiencing and draw from the knowledge and experience I have accumulated over the years.

That is what makes the work personal.

Herbalism isn't simply something I do at Sassy Fae.

It's part of who I am.
